Habitat for Humanity
Habitat USA and Habitat International are ecumenical faith-based housing
initiatives that seek to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness worldwide. Through volunteer labor, careful management, and donations of money and materials, Habitat builds and rehabilitates simple, decent homes so they are affordable for low-income families currently living in substandard housing.
LINC students that work with Habitat for Humanity (HFH) may work on
many different types of projects, from sustainable building research
projects to creation of a video to communicate the mission and needs of
the HOMEWORKS store sponsored by HFH in downtown Champaign. They
have worked on enhancement of volunteer recruitment, designed and
created signs for the HOMEWORKS store, designed housing facades for
Habitat, and investigated efficient energy use strategies for HFH
homeowners.
LINC students assist the local HFH affiliate in its efforts to raise
funds, educate homeowners, enhance building efforts, recruit volunteers,
and myriad other functions necessary to support Habitat's housing
efforts. Please note: LINC students that work with HFH will
not necessarily be involved in building a home.

Edgar Roman, a junior in engineering in the HFH section, paints the Habitat for Humanity warehouse, 40 E. University Ave., on 11/9/02 night. The warehouse space was recently purchased by Habitat and is being refurbished by volunteers. It will become a thrift store specializing in furniture, appliances and other housewares. Edgar's LINC team is working with Habitat on this warehouse project.
